Why is my StarLite booting to EFI Shell prompt?

If you are getting to the 'EFI Shell' from startup, this likely means that the boot loader is no longer working.

You should then attempt to manually boot with the following steps:

Attempt to manually boot via EFI Shell:

map -r
fs0:
cd EFI
cd ubuntu
grubx64.efi

After this, if the machine boots, you should update-grub via the following Terminal Session command:

sudo update-grub

Then reboot to check if this has resolved the boot issue.

If this does not work for you, then the next thing to try would be to boot from a Bootable USB drive. If you do not have one, you can easily create one with a blank USB Flash Drive.

Please see our guide with the steps on how to do this: Recovery from a bootable USB Drive

Once booted from a Ubuntu USB drive into a LIVE Environment, open a terminal session window (Ctrl + Alt + T) and type the following command before pressing the enter key:

For a SATA SSD:

sudo fdisk -l | grep sda

This should show if the drive is visible. If not, then the next step would be to unscrew the backplate and check the SSD is seated correctly in the socket.

Check the SSD is connected:

This will require a small Philips screwdriver (PH0 Size) to remove the backplate screws. If you are comfortable removing the backplate, then please see the steps below:

Please see our disassembly guide for reference here.

  • Disconnect from power
  • Remove the backplate screws and then the backplate cover
  • Reseat the SSD in the socket and make sure the end is clipped in at the end
  • Temporarily replace the backplate cover
  • Connect to power
  • Turn on the machine and allow it to boot

Failing that, please feel free to reach out to us via email at support@starlabs.systems and we would be happy to assist.
